It's the question that drives us.

A pre-requisite to reading this blog is that you have watched at least the first part of The Matrix Trilogy.

"This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

We all loved this conversation between Morpheus and Neo, didn’t we? Morpheus offered Neo nothing but the truth and to the seeker in Neo, that amounted to striking gold.

Morpheus wanted Neo to see for himself, who he really was, his beliefs, and a whole new world of possibilities that lay ahead of him.

Blindness towards what is real and what is possible has been beautifully depicted in what I consider the best philosophically embedded science fiction movies of all time. If you haven’t watched the movie and are still reading this blog, I urge you to stop. Watch the movie, and then come back to reading this.

Morpheus was immensely passionate about supporting Neo in his journey of not only exploring everything that was possible for him, but also unlocking potential that would allow him to accomplish goals that Neo didn’t even think were possible. Devoid of a personal agenda, Morpheus was inspired by his own conviction that Neo was ‘The One’, capable of expanding his vision, his capabilities and thereby serve a bigger purpose.

I must say, watching Morpheus is inspiring for us coaches, for you get to see how to create a space where our coaching clients are encouraged to see their own code, listen to their self-limiting language and address emotional roadblocks. Such coaching presence empowers our clients to tap into their latent capacity to dream big, re-align themselves to outcomes they truly care about and take action to generate results that fit their own definition of happiness and success. They can start shedding redundant beliefs and cultivate new ones needed to transform their lives and bring new enriching reasons to wake up each morning. After all everything is possible, and everyone is ‘Neo’ in their own world.

Interestingly, as coaches we too are playing Neo in our respective lives, bringing about transformation and creating breakthrough results. A growing sense of curiosity keep us constantly on the edge of learning. Questions that dance around all day in our head, getting us to explore within and without. And that brings me to the title of this blog.

In the movie, when Trinity is convincing Neo to meet Morpheus in the first place, she says, “It’s the question that drives us. It’s the question that brought you here. You know the question just as I did.”

Neo knew he was meant for something more, and what he saw around him was only the limitation of his own mind. I believe it’s this sensation that coaches too, need to look out for in their coaching clients. The coaching journey can then lead to life changing actionable insights and support the creation of a desired future. Like Morpheus, we have to hold the space to allow our clients to expand their inner world, by believing in them and asking the right questions. After all, it’s the question that drives us.
